frequently asked question
1. What is Cointreau ?
Cointreau is a crystal-clear liqueur with a 40% alcohol content which is made from the distillation of sweet and bitter orange peels. It is then blended with natural alcohol, sugar and water, all selected for their absolute purity and neutrality of taste. It has been enjoyed by millions of people worldwide for well over a century, and is firmly established as a stylish drink for many different occasions.
Here is Cointreau's nutritional information:
- Carbohydrates: 0.24 g per cl (7.4 g per oz)
- Sugar content: 24 g per 10 cl (7.4 g per oz)- Alcohol content: 40%
- Calories: 32 per cl (95 per fl oz)
Cointreau does not contain gluten, eggs, lactose or nuts.
2. Why does Cointreau sometimes become opalescent, when it is in fact a crystalline liqueur?
As a result of the distillation, Cointreau is highly concentrated in essential oils from the orange peels, and has a high alcoholic concentration. These particularities explain why, when cooled to a certain temperature or mixed with water, Cointreau turns opalescent. This is seen, for the best example, when it is poured over ice. As a matter of fact, some constituents of the essential oils are indissoluble under a certain temperature (around 7°C). Therefore, this phenomenon, a direct consequence of the Cointreau manufacturing secret, indicates a high quantity of essential oils in the final product and guarantees the uniqueness of the product worldwide.
Thanks to its premium quality, Cointreau can be drunk neat or on ice and is used by barmen across the globe to make the world's favourite cocktails.
3. Is Cointreau aged?
No ageing process is necessary. Cointreau's rich and complex taste derives from the quality of its essential oils. As with all liqueurs, Cointreau is at its best as soon as the distillation process has been completed. Correctly stored, it will remain in good condition for many years. However, to be enjoyed at its very best, Cointreau should be consumed within three years after manufacture.
4. What is the difference between Cointreau and a Triple Sec?
Cointreau is a high quality product made with only the finest natural ingredients, which account for its uniquely rich, complex taste. Cointreau is, and always has been, the one and only, original orange liqueur.
5. What is the best way to enjoy Cointreau?
You can enjoy Cointreau neat, on ice (with a twist of fresh lime), mixed with tonic, lemonade, soda water or fruit juice (pineapple, grapefruit, orange) and also in the world's most popular cocktails.
6. What are the most popular Cointreau cocktails?
7. Is Cointreau Kosher?
Cointreau has a rabbinical guarantee: the "Consistoire" of Paris has allowed its consumption. You can check this information on www.consistoire.org.
