Cointreau is the marriage of dried peels of sweet and bitter oranges and fresh peels of sweet oranges. The essences of sweet and bitter orange peels are magnified with just three other ingredients: pure water, sugar and neutral alcohol.
At the base of Cointreau's balance is the marriage of dried peels of sweet and bitter oranges and fresh peels of sweet oranges. The essences of sweet and bitter orange peels are magnified with just three other ingredients: pure water, sugar and neutral alcohol. No artificial flavours are added to Cointreau to preserve its aromatic balance.
Cointreau is still being developed in France precisely in Angers, its birthplace, according to the traditional methods of distillation defined by Édouard Cointreau. The recipe is now kept by our Master Distiller Carole Quinton who is the guardian of Cointreau's rich savoir-faire.
The sugar present in Cointreau comes exclusively from sugar beets.
Cointreau’s orange dried peels are mainly from Brazil, Tunisia, Ghana, Morocco and Spain (for the fresh peels).
In order to guarantee the constant quality required by Edouard Cointreau's original recipe, we are constantly looking for the best orange peels in the four corners of the world. Thus, each year, our Master Distiller Carole Quinton plies the planet, seeking out the finest terroirs and the most aromatic oranges.
Cointreau’s orange quest takes Carole Quinton, our Master Distiller, to Brazil (Barra Bonita, 300 kilometers north of Sao Paulo), Tunisia (near Cap Bon), Ghana (to Asebu, Kruwaet, Nsanien Central Region), Morocco (around Marrakech) and Spain (for fresh peels from Andalusia).
The alcohol used in the Cointreau recipe comes from sugar beets from the North of France, chosen for their neutrality and purity. This neutrality makes it possible to leave the aromas of orange peels fully expressed.

Cointreau Original is a liqueur, not a distillate. And as a liqueur, Cointreau is more than a triple sec. A liqueur is an officially recognised spirit category with quality indicators around the spirit’s components and method of production. On the other hand, triple sec is a generic term for any orange-flavoured spirit, with no specific rules around the method of production or quality criteria. Since there is no official EU legal definition, nor specific quality requirements that must be met to carry this name, there can be significant differences between one triple sec and another. Whereas distillate is a liquid produced from the vapour during a distillation process.

Cointreau is more than a triple sec; it is an officially recognised spirit category: the orange liqueur with legal production and quality requirements. With over 170 years of know-how, Cointreau offers exceptional organoleptic richness with 40+ aromas.
This is a matter of hot debate! The question is so complex that it deserves to be explored further … although one thing is for sure: as an orange liqueur with quality & production requirements, Cointreau is more than a triple sec. Why? Simply because a triple sec is the generic name used for any orange-flavoured spirit, while an “orange liqueur,” like Cointreau, actually goes a step further: as an officially recognised spirit category, there are certain production and quality requirements of the exceptional richness of 40+ aromas, coming from the highest quality sweet and bitter orange peels from the world’s finest terroirs, and 170 years+ of know-how—all resulting in a perfectly balanced cocktail. Thanks to an age-old expertise as Liquorist-Distiller, unique organoleptic qualities, and the Art of Cointreau (Art of Selection, Art of Harmony and Art of Distillation), Cointreau is an orange liqueur in a league of its own.
Sweet orange peels and essences give to Cointreau their juicy, fruity orange aromatic notes, as well as a bit of floral such as orange blossom, rose, and lavender.
The sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) peels and essences used in Cointreau come from the Seville region in Spain, Ghana, Senegal, and Brazil. The major varieties are Cadenera, Salustiana, Pera, Late Valencia, Sweet Mediterranean, Washington, and a local Ghanaian variety.
Bitter orange peels and essences give Cointreau a layered bouquet: initially fresh like mint or very zesty lime, then spicy bergamot, and finally pepper and cardamom notes.
Bitter orange peels and essences (Citrus aurantium ssp bigaradia), better known as Bigarade oranges today, come from Brazil and Tunisia. This orange’s leaf and flowers are also appreciated by the great “nez” of perfumery.
Those sweet and bitter orange peels are magnified with just three other ingredients: pure water, sugar and neutral alcohol.

We recommend consuming Cointreau within two years after opening the bottle, to be sure to enjoy the subtleties of its flavours to the fullest. However, there is no expiry date.
If kept for a longer period of time, it will still be safe to drink. However, its aromatic components might be altered, which might have an effect on its delicate flavours
As Cointreau contains 40% of alcohol, it does not freeze in a regular freezer. However, under extreme conditions (below minus 17°C) it may change aspect.

An antique bottle of Cointreau may have value for a collector. The second-hand market is driven by the price people are ready to sell and others are ready to buy. You may wish to visit some e-auction houses or to contact a collectors’ association to get some indication of value. The price would probably depend on the place, the moment, the demand and its state of preservation.
In 1885, Edouard Cointreau achieved his vision by creating a perfectly balanced and concentrated liqueur. Cointreau emerged as a crystalline spirit with a unique flavour profile, setting it apart from the sweeter liqueurs of that era.
Cointreau as we know it today was first produced in 1885. After several years of relentless research and experimentation, Edouard Cointreau succeeded in creating what he had imagined: a perfectly balanced, crystalline liqueur that's three times more concentrated in flavour and less sweet than the liqueurs of the time.

Born during the Industrial Revolution and bred of La Belle Époque, Cointreau has an important and exciting history. From the entrepreneurial flair of a liquorist-distiller who created the House in 1849, to Édouard Cointreau releasing his recipe for a unique French orange liqueur, to more than 300 international awards won since, Cointreau’s rich history is marked by many milestones.

We do care, and share, your concerns about the impact of packaging on the environment. It is in the DNA of Rémy Cointreau to care about the environment and about people. If challenging our consumption and production behaviours is a duty, taking action is a priority.
Christmas boxes are produced in very few quantities, and in rare markets. As we speak today, more than 15 million of Cointreau’s bottles have been produced this year in Angers, the nest of Cointreau. Each is made with 80% of recycled glass and naked of any packaging. Given their niche production – less than 3% - the Christmas gift pack represents a very small part of our CO2 emission that we are fighting through various initiatives. With Time, People and Terroir being the pillars of the Rémy Cointreau group, we are committed to finding long-term sustainable solutions and behaviours.
Here are some examples of our actions :
Recycling: 80% of the iconic Cointreau bottle is made of recycled glass and 100% of the waste from our Angers production site is recycled. Still in Angers, we are limiting our energy consumption by using only green energy.
Packaging: Producing more and more eco-friendly packaging by monitoring their life cycle environmental impact, with CO2 emissions, water consumption and aquatic ecotoxicity in the spotlight.
Plastic usage: Reducing significantly our plastic footprint by replacing this material as much as possible.
Soils: Investing in research to ensure sustainable agricultural methods for our precious oranges and terroir’s soils.
These are of course only a few examples of our ambitious Corporate Social Responsibility plan. If you wish to have a better understanding of our various actions, we invite you to consult our detailed CSR Report by clicking HERE

The favourite cocktail of Carole Quinton, our master distiller depends on the season but she used to like the White Lady, now it is the Cosmopolitan, and Alfred Cointreau, the 6th generation of the family, is fan of the Original Margarita.
The Original Margarita recipe :
30 ml Cointreau
50 ml blanco tequila
20 ml fresh lime juice
1. Make a salt rim on your glass
2. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice
3. Shake vigorously
4. Strain into a Margarita glass
5. Garnish with a lime wheel
Cointreau is part of the original Margarita cocktail recipe because it is one of the founding ingredients. Also, it has been used for it adds a distinct flavour and enhances the overall taste of the drink. Cointreau is a brand of triple sec, which is an orange liqueur made from the peels of bitter and sweet oranges. Its citrus flavour profile complements the tangy and tart flavours of lime juice, which is a key ingredient in a Margarita.
The addition of Cointreau in a Margarita provides a well-rounded and balanced taste. It adds a subtle sweetness and depth of flavour that complements the tartness of the lime juice and the tequila. The orange notes from Cointreau enhance the citrusy character of the drink without overpowering it.
Cointreau is considered a high-quality triple sec, known for its smoothness and intense orange aroma. Its use in a Margarita helps elevate the cocktail and adds a touch of sophistication to the overall drinking experience.
The Cointreau recipe is unique so there is no equivalent substitute. Indeed, the recipe of Cointreau Original has been unchanged since 1885, made of bitter and sweet oranges, its organoleptic properties enhance more than 400 cocktail recipes, as well as the Margarita. As Margaret Sames said, "A Margarita without Cointreau is not worth its salt."
