  Cointreau is the marriage of dried peels of sweet and bitter oranges and fresh peels of sweet oranges. The essences of sweet and bitter orange peels are magnified with just three other ingredients: pure water, sugar and neutral alcohol.

  Cointreau is still being developed in France precisely in Angers, its birthplace, according to the traditional methods of distillation defined by Édouard Cointreau. The recipe is now kept by our Master Distiller Carole Quinton who is the guardian of Cointreau's rich savoir-faire.

On the other hand, triple sec is a generic term for any orange-flavoured spirit, with no specific rules around the method of production or quality criteria. Since there is no official EU legal definition, nor specific quality requirements that must be met to carry this name, there can be significant differences between one triple sec and another. Whereas distillate is a liquid produced from the vapour during a distillation process.

  

• How long does Cointreau last?

  If not opened and stored in a dark place at ambient temperature, the bottle might be kept for years. There is no expiration date thanks to the 40% alcohol contained in the liquid. Alcohol helps preserve.
